Welcome to the City of El Centro! The City's organization is made up of several departments, offering a variety of services to the public.

City Council

The City Council is the governing body of the El Centro Municipal Government. The Council adopts City Ordinances, and reviews and approves all major policy matters, fiscal proposals and City projects. The City Council is composed of five elected Council members who serve four year terms. The City Council selects a Council member each year to serve as Mayor for one year term. The City Manager is the Chief Executive Officer of the City and Executive Director of the Redevelopment Agency charged with implementing City Council policies and directives. Administrative Services provides budget and financial management, general accounting, payroll, utility billing, franchise and business license administration services. In addition, the Department oversees the City data processing and telecommunications services program, risk management program and personnel services. The director can be reached at (760) 337-4573.

Development Services

& City Engineer

Development Services consists of the Building, Engineering and Planning and Housing departments. Development Services coordinates and provides development information and services to the public in accordance with the General Plan through:

  • Inspection and Enforcement of City adopted subdivision regulations
  • Building Codes and Zoning Ordinances
  • Plan checking for Code compliance
  • Issuance of all City required permits
  • Record keeping of all City maps
  • Processing of Site Development Plans
  • Conducting environmental Assessments
  • Maintenance of all City facilities
  • Providing housing rehabilitation opportunities for citizens of the City

The Public Works department is charged with maintaining the City streets, drainage systems and other right-of-way components such as street lights. This department also is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater treatment plant facilities and maintaining the fleet of City vehicles.

Parks and Recreation

This department is responsible for economic development and redevelopment activities throughout the City and Redevelopment Area. The division is the primary liaison with business owners, property owners, developers and local business oriented organizations to aid in the attraction and retention of businesses.

Fire Department

Public Safety/Fire Protection is provided by the El Centro Fire Department. Services include:

  • Firefighting
  • Rescue
  • Hazardows Materials Incident Response
  • Eergency Medical Services at Paramedic Level.

Additional services include fire personnel training and community disaster preparedness. Fire prevention activities include inspection, code compliance, community protection planning and public education for fire survival.

The Library is responsible for the acquisition, organization, and circulation of library materials in many diverse formats, e.g., books, videos, recorded books. The Library offers a wide range of public services from reference help to special children's programming.
