Viegas-Walker has been a dedicated and tireless champion to the people of El Centro and Imperial County for over twenty years. She has served on the El Centro City Council since 1997 and has been Mayor six times. She also serves on the El Centro Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees and serves on the Finance and Board Quality Committees at the hospital. During her service to the community of El Centro, Viegas-Walker is a well-known advocate and isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes and to ensure that the City of El Centro, its residents and businesses are fairly represented. According to former councilman Jason Jackson, ”Cheryl Walker has been an advocate for local control and city government. She will be a tremendous asset as a leader of the league of California Cities as well as the City of El Centro”.
2020 will go in the record books as a difficult year simply in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic and the astounding numbers of damaging fires in the state. “As we worked to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and launch dialogues with our community and within our cities about advancing equity, a series of dry lightning strikes ignited blazes statewide. California’s worst-ever wildfire season brought still untold losses to communities, livelihoods, and our beloved forests and open lands. The lives lost, and the ongoing impacts to our most vulnerable people because of the fires, are yet another tragedy in a year already overfilled with them. The call for leadership, and the need for mutual support among our communities to address these challenges, has never been louder” states Viegas- Walker. **
For Mayor Viegas-Walker, her ties to the City of El Centro run far deeper than a political seat. She and her husband, Steve Walker, have invested heavily in our community over many decades. “Steve was raised here, we raised our family here, and we have personally and professionally invested our time, talents and resources here because it is the right thing to do. To whom much is given, much will be required. Luke 12:48 or if you are a fan of Peter Parker - With great power comes great responsibility” states Viegas-Walker.
