 First Responders Park
The idea of First Responders Park was first conceptualized by Council Member, Edgard Garcia, during his tenure as Mayor in 2018/2019. At the time, Mayor Garcia envisioned a park that was inclusive for children of ALL abilities, including those that are wheelchair-bound and have fewer opportunities to play in typical playgrounds. The theme of “First Responders” was also very fitting given that the park would be located adjacent to Fire Station #3.
The playground at First Responders Park is different from other playgrounds because it provides meaningful play experiences for people of all ages and abilities. It focuses on creating a play environment where everybody can play, focusing in on the physical and social aspect of inclusion and the development of every child.
The Michael Benavidez Playground is dedicated and honors the life of Michael Benavidez, an El Centro firefighter who served the Fire Department for 22 years. During his tenure, Mr. Benavidez earned several awards, indicative of an outstanding firefighter, public servant and citizen.
The City of El Centro is grateful to the supporters of Measure P given that this park was built utilizing $2 million in Measure P funds. The park is a beautiful new amenity and we ask the community to show community pride by taking good care of the park.
