*IMPORTANT CITY ELECTION INFORMATION*
CHANGE IN ELECTION DATE AS MANDATED BY SB 415

Senate Bill No. 415 (SB 415), the California Voter Participation Rights Act (California Elections Code Sections 14050-14057) was approved by Governor Jerry Brown on September 1, 2015. SB 415 prohibits a local government like the City of El Centro from holding an election other than on a statewide election date if holding an election on a non-concurrent date has previously resulted in a significant decrease in voter turnout. Given that the City of El Centro has experienced a significant decrease in voter turnout on non-concurrent election dates, to comply with SB 415, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 17-04 to bring the City of El Centro into compliance by November 2018. On March 14, 2017, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors approved the City of El Centro’s request to consolidate with the Statewide General Election.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City of El Centro General Municipal Election has been changed from the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in odd numbered years to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even numbered years, to coincide with the Statewide General Election.

Pursuant to the California Elections Code §1301,El Centro Ordinance No. 17-04, and action taken by the Imperial County Board of Supervisors on March 14, 2017, the General Municipal Election scheduled for November 7, 2017 has been cancelled and the next General Municipal Election will be consolidated with the Statewide General Election on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Pursuant to California Elections Code §10403.5, due to the change in the election date, the terms of City Council Members, whose terms of office expire in November 2017, will be increased by 12 months until the November election results are certified and declared by the County of Imperial and El Centro City Council for the consolidated General Municipal Elections, in November 2018. Terms of City Council Members whose terms of office would have expired in November 2019 will be extended until the election results are certified and declared by the County of Imperial and the El Centro City Council for the November 2020 election.
